Between Memory and Remembering
Fall 2017
Critic: Julie Kim
The primary objective of this project is to develop a retreat that caters to the unique needs of artists and movie makers in Monument Valley. Situated at the junction of Utah and Arizona, the site boasts a rich and storied past that has been captured in countless Hollywood films and photographs. However, the project aims to delve deeper and explore the complex relationship between the region's awe-inspiring landscapes and the indigenous Navajo people who have called this place home for centuries.

To this end, a profound challenge is to craft a space that is not only functional but also respectful of the environment and the people who live in it. Through the use of thoughtful sectioning and reflective renderings, the project aims to highlight the intricate balance between the built and natural environment.
By utilizing various design elements and techniques, the project aims to explore the stark contrast between various essential elements, such as the interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces, the balance between ordinary and unconventional, and the nuanced relationship between light and darkness. This approach allows the project to take on a life of its own, creating a cohesive narrative that seamlessly integrates the site's history, the needs of the guests, and the Navajo people's deep connection to their land.

Through this project, the goal is to create a lasting tribute to the unique cultural and geographical landscape of Monument Valley while providing a space for artists and moviemakers to find inspiration and peace in a world that is increasingly fast-paced and chaotic. The project's success will be measured not only by its functional and aesthetic value but also by its ability to contribute to a broader conversation about the relationship between people and their environment.
